NEW DELHI: The Municipal Corporation of Delhisealed 16 unauthorized properties, including 45 floors, in Govindpuri on Monday. The south zone of MCD demolished and sealed 53 properties. MCD officials said that new floors were being constructed in the area without their approval.
"Many people in this area are either adding new floors to the existing structures or undertaking fresh constructions after demolishing the old ones. We have sealed around 45 floors on these 16 properties. There is rampant unauthorized construction taking place here,'' said an MCD official, who is part of the central zone.
Last month, MCD had sealed 35 floors in Govindpuri. But the drive had to be discontinued midway following protests from the locals. "People need to understand that a majority of these constructions are not safe. One needs to ensure that the plan is drawn-up by an architect, all the laws adhered to and structural safety certificate is accorded to the buildings,'' said an MCD official.
Sources say builders sell-off the flats at very high rates. But most buyers are unaware that the construction is faulty. It's the buyer who suffers in the end, as none of the flats have the necessary approval from the corporation. "This sealing drive is going to be a deterrent against unauthorized constructions. In some cases, people were adding three to four floors to the existing structure without our permission,'' the official said.
So far, MCD has sealed around 80 floors, which were being constructed in 25 properties in the area. "We had asked for additional police force, as we had planned a massive sealing drive,'' said the official.
In south zone, action was taken against illegal constructions in Malviya Nagar, Chattarpur Enclave, Freedom Fighters' colony, Saket and Paryavaran complex.
