NEW DELHI: If the Supreme Court-appointed monitoring committee has its way, one of the landmarks of the city might soon be sealed. According to committee sources, Vivanta by Taj Ambassador, a five-star property in Lutyen's Delhi, is "unauthorized" as its building plan has not been sanctioned till date.
The committee has asked the land and development office under the ministry of urban development and the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) to start the process of sealing the hotel along with other properties in north and south Sujan Singh Park. As per directives, any other commercial activity in this area is likely to be sealed by the civic body starting Monday.
All these properties are unauthorized as this area was to be developed as a residential block and no commercial activity is permitted here, sources said.
Vivanta by Taj Ambassador, New Delhi, is an Intach-listed heritage building built in 1945 by colonial architect Walter George and is a poetic medley of British and art deco style. The other properties which are likely to be targeted in this drive include a school located near Golf Apartments, which has a swimming pool in the vicinity, and a play school located in south Sujan Singh Park.
"There was no mention of constructing a hotel in this area as per the lease agreement. The records date back to 1947-1948 and till date, no building sanction plan for this hotel has been approved by NDMC and no completion certificate has been issued to them," said a source.
Committee members claimed around 16 acres were provided in the area in the early 1940s for development of residential blocks with no reference of a hotel site anywhere.
A spokesperson of the hotel said: "Wehave received no intimation in this matter and business would continue as usual for them."
A committee member said: "The school and the play school, which comprises of basement and ground floor, are also illegal as no building plan has been passed for these properties. There are four servant quarters in the vicinity which need to be demolished as they were also built without required permission."
NDMC said as the land and development office was the land owning agency, the civic body was awaiting directives from it before taking any action. "We have also been given a copy of the notice issued by the monitoring committee but we will just be assisting the L&DO in the sealing action and are awaiting a formal request from them."
According to the notice, the sealing is to start from Monday and an action-taken report will have to be submitted by July 8. The land and development office could not be contacted.
The members of the SC committee claimed they were also going to take action against Golf Apartments as many properties had violated the plan.
NDMC sealed 30 shops in Sujan Singh Park in January on the ground of misuse after directives from the monitoring committee.
