Now, govt likely to drop structural safety clause - Times Of India

NEW DELHI: After reversing its order which made structural safety certificates a mandatory stipulation for registration of property in April, the Delhi government now wants to steer clear of making these certificates a precondition for regularization of unauthorized colonies. The existing guidelines for regularization of the 1,639 unauthorized colonies have no provision for structural safety certification and the government plans to address the issue only after regularization.

Though the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) in a letter to the Union urban development ministry in April emphasized the need to amend the regularization guidelines and incorporate structural safety as a prime concern before regularization, the Delhi government feels such a move will "hamper the process of regularization".

To buttress the argument about need for structural safety, MCD commissioner KS Mehra gives the example of Lalita Park building collapse in his letter. Lalita Park is an unauthorized regularized colony. It was one of the 600 colonies regularized in 1983.
