Mahabal Mishra, member of Parliament from West Delhi spoke to Hindustan Times. Excerpts.
How do you see west Delhi developing in the next few years?
Delhi’s expansion in east and south has almost touched the state borders. West Delhi is the only area where land is available and the city can be expanded. In the next few years, you will see the majority of housing, infrastructure and recreational projects coming up here. The DDA has already drafted the Masterplan and the zonal plans for this area. The sub-cities that will come up here would be modern with all amenities.
But the land in west Delhi is fertile. Farmers must be angry over the acquisition of land?
I agree that the land here is fertile. But even the farmers see their future in housing projects. They understand the housing boom in the NCR and are ready to invest their land in such projects.
What kind of infrastructure do you think is required for sustainable growth in west Delhi?
The zonal plans that the DDA has prepared has taken into account all future requirements in terms of facilities and infrastructure. The roads would be wider, there would be strategically located commercial centres, well-planned transport system to connect the sub-cities with other parts of Delhi. There will be a new express highway for Gurgaon from Najafgarh.
So you think west Delhi can be a good option for reasonable housing?
It will not be possible for everyone to buy a house here. But some houses will be constructed for the economically weaker section as well. It is the DDA’s responsibility to provide housing for poor and lower middle class. Unfortunately, DDA has become a land broker now.
