Though the authorities have hiked land relief rate by 12.5%, farmers have refused to accept the new rates. They said they now want scrapping of the Land Acquisition Act. Besides, they want that they be granted the right to sell their land on their own terms. Bhoomi Adhigrahan Pratirodh Andolan Samiti spokesperson Roopesh Verma said on Tuesday, "This was the annual hike announced by the authorities. At this stage, farmers want the Land Acquisition Act scrapped. They want an amended act to be passed by Parliament, which grants farmers the right to sell their plots directly to private builders."
"Representatives from various farmer bodies from different states should be included in the drafting committee, entrusted to suggest amendments in the present law," said Verma.
"The Land Acquisition Act amendment bill has been pending for over two years in Parliament. Instead of taking measures to get the bill passed, political parties keep on visiting Bhatta-Parsaul to sympathise with farmers," said Verma.
"It is farmers' land. Whatever be its market cost, land owners should have the right to negotiate its price. The authorities should not forcibly grab land and sell it to private builders to earn profit," said Verma.
Representatives of the Badalpur Sangarsh Samiti, Vikas Sangarsh Samiti, Kisan Sabha and Janwadi Mahila Sabha and villagers from Khairpur, Sadopur, Sirsa, Khanpur, Junpat, Ghangola, Chachula, Luxor, Thapkheda, Kasna, Ladpura, Saddulapur, Vaidpura, Khedi, Khodna Khurd, Tilapta, Kanarsi, Makoda and Chithera have decided not to give an inch of their land to the authority. They claimed no forcible acquisition would be allowed.
"We will protest even if we have to face the bullets. It is a 'do-or-die' situation for us. On our land, private developers are earning thousands of crores in connivance with authority officials," said Sarda Ram Sharma, convener, Bhoomi Adhigrahan Pratirodh Andolan Samiti.
"Without the right to sell, farmers will not allow acquisition of their land," said Ajit Daula, a farmer leader.
