The Delhi Police are catching landlords who haven’t verified their tenants’ antecedents and are coming down hard on them. In an ongoing drive, the southeast police have challaned 38 landlords so far. These landlords will now be summoned by the courts, which will decide on a punishment of two months in jail or a fine of Rs200 or both.
Ajay Chaudhry, additional commissioner of police (southeast), said, “This district is home to a large floating population. We have been asking landlords to get tenants verified, but the response hasn’t been good.”
Unverified tenants were found to be behind some recent crimes.
“Beat officers have been asked to go door to door and compile a list of errant landlords,” Chaudhry added.
